This taps into our fear of the ancient world. A first note of an eerie figure, a prospect of company on his walk, who seemed to be making great efforts to catch up with him. This figure is indistinct and we are not sure if it is friend or foe. This pursuit of the unknown is creating a sense of fear, of which lies the thought of an unknown evil emerging from the sea.The Latin inscriptions on the whistle translate as Who is this who is coming? which builds up a sense of mystery and tension. M.R. James creates fear of loneliness when Parkins sees a figure when he blows into the whistle a vi sion of a wide, dark expanse at night in the midst a lonely figure. He would have seen more had not the picture been broken by the surge of a gust of wind. The gust of wind is like a force repelling Parkins away that he should not blow the whistle or something distasteful might happen.After the second blow of the whistle, there was a huge gust of wind from the window and the candles both went out. The gust means something more. It induces darkness creating a sense of terror especially when the candles go out which creates the image of unwanted closeness. That someone is too close for comfort.The author manifests Parkins fears and anxieties in his dreams, making it surreal and could happen in the future; A black shape bobbing up and down looking eagerly back and rapidly growing in larger, as a figure in pale, fluttering draperies, ill-defined. This is called atavistic which is primitive in human terms, an atavistic fear at night; something might get you at night.M.R. James creates h umour with the choice of phonetic language for the lower classes: Ow, I seen it wive at me out of the window. The front winder it was, at the otel, said the boy. There are many clauses at the end to give more information; this also keeps the sentences to flow freely. Also when youre terrified, the reader is only concerned on what they are reading at that moment. He is careful to use descriptive words where necessary. Face of crumpled linen. This is very brief but not a detailed description, probably like this because Parkins related this to someone else who is telling us the story, we are hearing it second hand. M.R. James has taught us a terrifying lesson about the dangers of intellectual pride-Parkins was so happy with his intellect that he didnt seem to understand some things which made him feel scared.Mr Humphreys and His Inheritance is about a man who has inherited a house from his late uncle and there is a mysterious maze in the garden of the house which has been locked for a long time.Mr Humphreys never knew his relative so M.R. James constructs the sense of loneliness in him. He talks about ancient ruins in the story of Parkins but this is about ancient temples. Mr Humphreys has gained entrance to the maze that was covered by a wall and near the gate was a motto: My secret is for me and for the sons of my house.In the maze, a noise is heard and he thinks it was Cooper but he says it isnt the first odd thing. This is a fear of intrusion and that something might come back from the dead.It is a convenient thing for M.R. James to make Humphreys pick out a quarto(part) from a book of sermons. This recounts to his own childhood when he had an interest in old books and picked out dusty volumes. This is a major story of conventional writing and its a warning about curiosity. Often in the middle of the maze, there are treasures, but something obstructs it like the Minotaur. This is a warning to Humphreys to not be avaricious-greedy and desire to have things(e.g . desiring gold). The strange globe at the centre of the maze has now changed with inscriptions of prince of darkness and shadow of death. Latin etchings can be quite frightening because of their connection with religion and the medieval world.This is the idea of perception that M.R. James includes, telling us that we see the world differently and how Mr Cooper and Humphreys differentiate temperatures when they touch the globe.The trees and their surroundings create a shadow by the reflected moonlight. There is a vague suggestion that the woods are seducing Mr Humphreys like the belief in the god Pan. The god Pan seduced people into the woods like Selene, the moon goddess. M.R. James describes the weather to represent the emotions of the characters and peoples feelings however in this case how Humphreys is feeling; a dark ominous sign and a symbol of danger. This is called pathetic fallacy. He describes a small Irish yew, thin and black. The maze is using dark, featureless objects t o defend itself, and it is getting closer to the house. My secret is for me and the sons of house (It seems that the maze is opening for Humphreys but not for the others like Lady Wardrop because hes a relative of the uncle.)Rationalising and interpreting the inexplicable in different ways, is a theme in M.R. James story. This is because science was still developing in the Edwardian period which certainly excited and attracted interest, but M.R James doesnt usually use science to explain the story. This is unusual but effective because in science one must test things empirically to prove them, but ghosts are not considered to be proven because they do not fit into the scientific world.The title of The Ash Tree is effective in creating the image in the readers mind of something huge and daunting. People tend to fear the trees and forests when they are alone and perhaps M.R. James had this perception upon writing his story. The magnitude of the tree is described in the story where it is almost touching the building with its branches.Castringham Hall is playing on popular fears, the author describes the harrowing occurrences which took place at the Hall in 1690; a number of witch trials were conducted at the Hall, and these accused were feared to have been possessed by demonic powers. The authors ability to explain the inexplicable is evident in his description of Sir Matthews amazement at a moving creature which had more than four legs. Delving into the unknown is the authors way of keeping his readers apprehensive about what may happen next. There is an attempt by the characters to rationalise their experience, not making much of the momentary vision. Here the reader is able to sympathise to some degree at the naivety of the characters who brush off what will certainly affect them later.The author, through the use of powerful and emotive imagery in his depiction of the death of Sir Matthew Fell, describes in quite disgusting detail the sight of his corpse. This corpse however is frighteningly unique in that those who come into contact with it are left to endure the pain of abnormal swellings. The funeral sermon of his death had been printed under the Malicious dealings of AntiChrist. This is very powerful as it means ESCHATOLOGICAL(APOCALYPTIC) which is coming to an end. This force of evil contrasts with biblical verses and antichrist.Again the author delves into the unknown and employs this technique to keep his readership engaged and so that they can search for the answers to these abnormal and suspicious occurances: two or three screams there were, his face struck with an incredulous terror and loathing before he cried out in a dreadful voice, remains of an enormous spider, veinous and seared as the fire burned lower down, more terrible bodies began to break out covered with greyish hair.The authors vivid descriptions of a decomposed body, in fact a skeleton with the skin dried upon the bones plays on our fear and distaste with the vul gar. The lady turns out to be that of Mrs Mothersole and the disgraceful scene is stomach turning for the weak hearted.Theres been a great deal of superstition surrounding the number 13: Many horror films have been screened in which the superstitious number has played a central role. A vivid construction of fear is found in Andersons arrival at door Number 13. The fact that the door would not open continued with the sound of nasty movements from inside the room sets the scene.The mention of the rumours surrounding the Bishops practise of secret and wicked arts is effective in introducing the dangers of anti-Christianity or anti religious forces since they deal with the unknown.The ceasing of footsteps and sound of hissing breathing outside number 13 works on the fear and apprehension of the readers. The almost ghostly appearance of a bearded man and shadowy figure at number 13 where Anderson unfamiliar with what is lurking in his surrounding, and the flickering of a convenient red l ight, draws the reader into a tense atmosphere. This plays with the idea of perception in Number 13 on how Anderson feels as if the room has shrunk and become narrowed.Andersons confusion about his locations creates the perception of a man touched by the secret and wicked arts introduced at the beginning of the story.Anderson has been placed in an unfamiliar setting where he finds himself delvinginto the unknown; mysterious voices and scenes, together with disturbing Latin inscriptions speaking of spirits become a horror for him, and his fear is felt by the reader.The use of very descriptive adjectives do much to emphasize and illustrate the setting that Anderson finds himself in the quiet is described as deadly.Andersons fears about number 13 come out when the door eventually opened, through which an arm emerged which clawed at Jensens shoulder.Jensens disgust a fright is a contrasted with the low laugh of whatever demonic powers reside within number 13.The characters are desperate for a refuge from what is described as the devils den which relates to anti-Christianity.The discovery of the document in the conclusion is an attempt to explain the inexplicable. Quite naturally deeply disturbed by the events in the hotel, Anderson and Jensen believed to have found the answers within the phenomena. To there dismay however, they are unfamiliar with the language whether it is upside down or written in two different languages. There is a degree of tension therefore, the reader is left uncertain and without explanation concerning the events at the hotel.M.R. James constructs a sense of fear and terror by using themes of loneliness and isolation. In his childhood, he liked to be alone, reading old books and he relates this to how he isolates Mr Humphreys and Parkins. Other themes are intrusion, revenge and justice, witchcraft, perception, the Uncanny, superstition and trying to explain the inexplicable.

How to Cheat on the ACT SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Disclaimer: we are not going to tell you how to cheat on the ACT. What we will tell you about are things you can get in trouble for, along with high-profile cheating scandals that have happened recently and in past years. We do not advocate cheating by any means! Let's take a look at some of these scandals, as well as make sure you're aware of all the rules and regulations of test day so you don't inadvertently jeopardize your scores or chance of college admissions. South Korea and Hong Kong:The Case of the Leaked Test The most recent cheating scandal around the ACT involves the June , 2016 administration of the test in South Korea and Hong Kong(or what was supposed to be the June administration). Officials heard that test materials had beenleaked in advance of the test. ACT, Inc's official statement was this: "ACT has just received credible evidence that test materials intended for administration in these regions have been compromised." The result? ACT, Inccanceled the test altogether, doing so only hours before students were supposed to take the test. About 5,500 students at 56 different test centers were unable to take the test they had registered for. While these students will get refunds, they don't get the chance to reschedule their June test. Instead, they'll have to wait until the next official ACT test date in September. At this point, it's unclear who got their hands on ACT test materials or how they did it. While the ACT has never been canceled abroad before, the SAT has been canceled or investigated several times over the past few years in both South Korea and Hong Kong. It seems that test centers take advantage of time zone differences to obtain information from students taking tests in the U.S. Unfortunately, it was the test-takers in South Korea and Hong Kong who suffered from this underhanded activity and were unable to take the ACT at all on their scheduled June test date. New York: The Case of False Identities Cheating scandals around the ACT haven't just happened overseas. In fact, thelargest and most high profile scandal to date happened in 20 on Long Island, New York. Over 20 arrests were made in this case where students paid other students (most of them already in college) to take the test in their place. They paid students up to $3,600, and these students used fake IDs to enter the testing center. When these cases of false identity were discovered, the perpetrators were charged with scheming to defraud in the first degree, criminal impersonation in the second degree, and falsifying business records in the first degree. None of these students ultimately faced jail time, but their names and this case will forever be on the public record. Apparently, this kind of identity swapping had been going on for years. As for the aftermath of this scandal? Now all students have to upload a photo of themselves when they register for the ACT. Would you be tempted to pay money if it meant a perfect scorer would take the ACT for you? Kentucky: The Case of Too Many Practice Tests In 2014, the principal and other school officials at Louisville Male High School came under investigation for heavy assistance of students taking the ACT. Because the ACT is used in many states as a high school standardized exam, it's a high stakes test for schools and administrators, as well as students. Several students reported that school officials gave substantial help during their test. Administrators let students take multiple practice tests with the real questions, before entering their real answers for the real test. Furthermore, officials helped students with questions they struggled with and even gave them answers, giving Louisville students an unfair advantage on the actual ACT. Even worse, students reported administrators telling them to keep hush about the cheating in interviews.In the end, the principal was fired from the school, and the school was required to institute new behaviors to prevent this cheating from happening in the future. Michigan: The Case of Calculator Misconduct Similar suspicions swirled around Fremont High School in Michigan in 2014. College Board received an anonymous tip about improper calculator use that indicated that school officials had uploaded far too much information on students' calculators, almost like having a "cheat sheet" while taking the ACT. Ultimately the ACT decided that while their actions gave students an unfair advantage, they had found a loophole in the rules and were not technically cheating. Students scores were eventually released, but they were withheld for a long time while the investigation was underway. While these cases of cheating on the ACT made the news, most cases are less high profile. Instead, they occur because a student or test proctor reports unusual behavior on test day. Let's take a look at the more common causes of ACT scores being withheld or canceled. Don't do this. What Else You Can Be Disqualified From the ACT For The basic signs of cheating - likelooking at someone else's test paper, talking, using inappropriate materials, or causing any disturbances - are all prohibited while taking the ACT. Since it is strictly timed, students cannot look back or ahead in the test booklet. They cannot flip through it or work on a different section than the one currently being timed, nor can they continue to write or fill in answers after time has been called. Once time has been called, that's it - absolutely no more filling in the bubble sheet or adding one last sentence to your essay. Otherwise your test proctor could take your test booklet and ask you to leave the testing center. Once your test has been scored, there may be a few unusual trends that alert scorers to possible signs of cheating. For example, huge fluctuations in your scores could prompt an investigation - if you improve by a great number of points between your first and second test administration, for example, or show large inconsistencies between similar sections. They may ask you to provide a testimonial on your behalf, but could withhold your scores indefinitely or have you retake the test. Another cause for concern is if your answers resemble that of a nearby student too closely. One Boston student was shocked to have her scores withheld, because her answers looked almost identical to a student she sat near. While very rare, these kinds of investigations begin after the tests have been scored and analyzed. So if your scores are withheld, what are the consequences? Consequences of Cheating on the ACT In the high profile New York case, which involved fake IDs and exchanges of large sums of money, actual charges were filed against students and arrests were made. In less nefarious circumstances, like the ones described above, usually the ACT will cancel your scores and you will have to retake the test. If your score reports have already been sent off to colleges, theACT will notify the colleges that your scores are now invalid. They usually won't provide a specific reason, but instead will say, "The ACT cancels scores for a variety of reasons, including illness of the examinee, mis-timing of the test, disturbances or irregularity at the testing site. It is the ACT policy to treat the ACT's reasoning for canceling a specific score as confidential." Colleges won't necessarily hear that you were accused of cheating, but cancellation of scores is still a big red flag that you don't want to have on your application. The college will likely know if your scores were the only ones to be canceled, thereby ruling out "mis-timing" or "disturbances at the testing site" as a possible explanation. Plus, many months will probably pass by the time you get a final decision from ACT, sign up for and retake the test, and receive and send off your new score reports, causing you to miss important deadlines. If your scores were withheld due to inconsistencies, the ACT may have you retake the test. If you score within three points of your last performance, then you will get to keep those new scores. If not, then your new and improved test scores will be canceled and invalidated. For the most part, students whose scores get withheld and/or cancelled may retake the test, but this can be a huge hassle, both emotionally and in terms of getting everything done in time for your college application deadlines. Relax! The ACT is an important test, but there's no reason to lose your head. What Can You Do Instead of Cheating? Don't cheat on the ACT - prep instead! Nothing is a replacement for preparation and familiarity with the content and format of the tests. To avoid raising any suspicions about cheating on the ACT, make sure you're familiar with all the instructions and timing of the test. This is especially crucial if English isn't your first language or you're unsure if you'll absorb the exact instructions once the test has been passed out. By knowing the exact instructions before test day, you can focus your energy and attention on the content, rather than on logistical details. As we mentioned above, the testmakers look at your scores to detect any unusual fluctuations or similarities with a nearby test-taker. To prevent this possibility, make sure you take the test seriously every time you take it. Don't treat any administration as a throw-away, as this could become a problem later on down the line. Instead, try your best every time so your scores are an accurate representation of your skills, abilities, and preparation every time you take the test. Finally, try to keep perspective through the pressures of achievement and competition. Make sure to give yourself breaks and use the coping skills that best work for you to alleviate stress, like meditation, mindfulness, and exercise. Try to see the forest through the trees - in other words, do your best to look at the big picture rather than stressing out about one part of it along the way.By acting with integrity and purpose, you will end up in the college that's the best fit for you. Comparing Equality in Henry James The Turn of the Screw and Edith Whar

The Theme of Equality in Henry James' The Turn of the Screw and Edith Wharton's The Lady's Maid's Bell Henry James' The Turn of the Screw and Edith Wharton's "The Lady's Maid's Bell" share a common theme: all people are equal. Both authors generate this theme by bridging class barriers with a generous master and mistress who have revolutionary ideas. Although circumstances differ in both stories, the common theme remains easily discernable with the words and actions of both Mrs. Brympton in "The Lady's Maid's Bell" and the young master, Miles in The Turn of the Screw. Through their friendship, trust, and eventual love for their servants, both the master and mistress prove their modern thoughts of equality between servants and higher classes. Mrs. Brympton establishes a relationship of friendship and equality with Miss Hartley from the beginning, and their friendship resembles that of Mrs. Brympton and her former maid, Emma, whom she dearly loved. Even Mrs. Railton, who mentions the job offer to Hartley, asserts that "[Mrs. Brympton] wants a maid that can be something of a companion" (Wharton 13). Upon employment, Hartley discovers for herself that "Mrs. Brympton [is] the kindest of ladies" (Wharton 15). Something about Mrs. Brympton's nature seems to insinuate an equality between her maid and herself from the beginning because the mistress shows natural compassion and humanity toward all of her servants. Mrs. Blinder, another servant, describes the loyal relationship between Mrs. Brympton and Emma, her previous handmaid: "My mistress loved her like a sister" (Wharton 17). This love between higher and lower classes remains extremely rare in the Victorian Era, and even the mistress, Mrs. Brympton, realizes this; consequent ... ...e master and the mistress stand by their convictions, and their relationships with servants reflect such an equality. Both Mrs. Brympton and young Miles even grow to love their servants and confide in them, which testifies that they are treated as more than equal peers. In Henry James' The Turn of the Screw and Edith Wharton's "The Lady's Maid's Bell" servants become equal citizens due to the nature of their master or mistress, and the theme rings clearly through both works, which becomes the concept that all classes of people are equal. National Security vs. Civil Liberties Essay

The recent September 11th attacks have caused many Americans to wonder about the personal sacrifices to be made in order to keep the nation â€Å"safe and free.† With mixed results, it has become a common practice throughout history to restrict personal freedoms in the name of national security. Many questions arise from this process: Where is the line drawn? If liberties are restricted do they ever truly return? If it is true that we are doomed to repeat history if we fail to learn from it, an examination into the circumstances of the Japanese American internment in 1942 may inform the ways to most effectively deal with the security concerns faced by Americans today. There is a paradox in American theories of democracy and freedom. As the United States has fought abroad in the name of freedom, we have simultaneously restricted the personal freedoms of people in the country. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt engaged in battle in World War II, it was not only to retaliate against the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor but to bring down the Nazi regime that was murdering people in Europe. At the same time, Roosevelt had nearly 120,000 Japanese Americans, the majority of whom were American citizens or legal permanent residents, rounded up into internment camps, violating their civil rights to be treated with fairness and equality, without discrimination and the Fifth Amendment liberty of due process. In 2001, people are quick to dismiss the idea of an internment of American citizens, suggesting that the country has come a long way from 1942. The hypothesis that the government might conduct surveillance or use illegal wiretaps to monitor groups or individuals that it suspects of domestic terrorism seemed foreign before September 11th, and now has become a way to gain more information about potential suspects. These new measures, included in the USA Patriot Act, delicately trace the line between national security and civil liberties. A brief look at how the Bush administration has extended its powers since September 11th includes the detaining without charge of thousands of Muslim and Arab-American men without release of information to kin nor legal access, a new Bureau of Prisons regulation which allows Justice Department officials to listen in on conversations  between suspects and their lawyers and a new legislation, which includes warrant-less searches, roving wiretaps and a redefinition of a â€Å"domestic terrorist.† American society is not yet comfortably distanced from the practices of history that have threatened the civil rights and liberties Americans enjoy. Fred Korematsu’s speaking engagements continued in 2001, as he warned college students to stay aware of what the government is doing, and to stand prepared to defend their freedoms. In times of crisis, as presidential power expands, domestic policies must take shape to ensure the protection of Americans, from foreign and domestic threats. The Bush administration has a difficult task ahead, to keep Americans safe while maintaining the freedom which makes this country great. The delicate issue of interviewing Arab Americans has presented a challenge and continues the debate among Americans about how many of our civil liberties become expendable when the country is at war.

Human Resources Management: Outsourcing

Outsourcing certain human resources roles can save an organization time and money in many respects. While it is not necessary or often feasible to outsource all human resources roles, outsourcing various functions can help reduce overhead and result in greater efficiency in some organizations. To save money however organizations must decide what human resources roles can be effectively outsourced to save money and not impeded performance or harm the organization. This paper will discuss the benefits of outsourcing certain human resources roles, including payroll, benefits administration and recruitment and selection. By outsourcing each of these roles an organization can reduce overhead, risk and save valuable time when conducting normal business operations. These ideas are explored below. Outsourcing typically reduces the number of human resources staff necessary on hand to handle ordinary HRM activities (Sims, 2002). Outsourcing involves â€Å"long term contractual relationships† with businesses and external providers (Lever, 1997:37). Outsourcing relationships are increasingly common in human resources. Outsourcing can provide organizations with multiple competitive advantages, including cost savings. There are many roles that an organization can outsource to save money. Some of the more common roles that organizations are outsourcing to save money include payroll and benefits administration and employee hiring or recruitment (Lever, 1997). By outsourcing these functions an organization can maintain a smaller personnel base and reduce the number of experts needed to manage the human resources function (Lever, 1997). Outsourcing experts can recommend the best methods for conducting payroll and can handle the often lengthy administrative tasks associated with benefits administration. By outsourcing the recruitment and selection process an organization can rest assured that well qualified experts will screen candidates, background check candidates, and ensure that the best employees are hired to handle core competencies. In most organizations even if an external party manages the recruitment and selection process, internal managers or representatives still have the opportunity to meet with potential candidates and determine whether or not they are a good fit for the organization or a given team. Outsourcing can help reduce the business risks associated with hiring, payroll and benefits administration. Outsourcing companies share the burden of risk for all employees they recommend to a company and all job roles they carry out within the organization. For this reason they typically operate under stringent guidelines, policies and procedures that ensure optimal delivery of service. HRM typically focuses much attention on risk management. By outsourcing certain functions in an organization however, the firm will not only save money but also valuable time, and can concentrate its attention on building or developing other programs including employee rewards and recognition programs. It is important to note that most organizations will have to pay a premium price to outsource to certain experts (Lever, 1997). In larger organizations this may still result in a cost savings, when compared with the expense of paying annual salaries to multiple internal experts in charge of payroll, recruitment and benefits administration. It is important that each company take into consideration their unique situation and decide whether or not outsourcing makes sense in the long term. Outsourcing can provide substantial savings when it comes to filling positions requiring specialized skills (Lever, 1997). Traditionally human resource managers have spent hundreds of hours researching candidates to select ideal candidates for hard to fill positions. This often results in high expenditures. If a candidate does not work out, the cost to re-recruit and re-train a new candidate can be debilitating. Fortunately most outsourcing recruitment agencies provide access to specialized who are highly skilled and have access to networks of specialized candidates to choose from. Because the outsourcing agencies only task is to fill this position or others rather than handle multiple roles for the organization, they can often find a candidate more efficiently and quickly. They chances that a candidate will stay with the firm long term are also much higher due to better screening methods and more skills training and testing (Lever, 1997). Outsourcing does change the culture within an organization, but this change is not necessarily one that is negative. In fact, outsourcing can bring about positive change within the organization. Many employees fear that outsourcing is negative, a means by which an organization replaces internal candidates with external specialists. While this is true, in many organizations outsourcing makes sense and can benefit employees and managers alike in the long term. An organization that saves money outsourcing can redirect those funds into employee promotion programs and employee incentive programs. Outsourcing certain job roles including payroll, benefits administration and recruiting and hiring can result in risk reduction for an organization, can save an organization much time and often results in cost savings in the long run. These benefits of course are provided when the organization takes it's time to select an appropriate vendor to meet its needs and fulfill its obligations.

LinkedIn announced on August 9, 2011 that they have rolled out yet another new feature on their site:   the â€Å"Improve Your Profile Tool.†Ã‚   According to the LinkedIn blog, this tool â€Å"analyzes your profile and offers you personalized profile recommendations to help you put your best foot forward.† Clichà ©s aside, this tool could be extremely useful to you if your profile is not 100% complete, or if you have failed to include key information. Here’s my problem:   I ran the Profile Makeover on my own profile, and all it told me was that I didn’t advertise my date of graduation from high school (I left it out by choice, as some of you might as well); I didn’t list the degree I got from high school (pretty obvious isn’t it?); and I didn’t specify the concentration of my J.D. (there wasn’t one – a J.D. is a J.D.). Where I’m left, as a LinkedIn profile writer and editor, is that I have no idea what other types of suggestions LinkedIn might make to its users who have not optimized their profiles. That’s where you come in. I would love for you to put your profile through the Improve Your Profile process and report back on this blog what the tool tells you is missing or incorrect in your profile. I will then know what advice I should be giving to people about LinkedIn, and what information LinkedIn will take care of.   I don’t want to be duplicating things unnecessarily!   The data you provide will greatly inform the content I choose to convey in my e-book and LinkedIn webinars. All About Escape Literature

All About Escape Literature As the name suggests, so-called escape literature is written for entertainment, and to let the reader become totally immersed in a fantasy or alternate reality. Much of this kind of literature falls into the guilty pleasure category (think romance novels). But there is a wide variety of different literary genres that could be labeled as escapist: science fiction, westerns, magical realism, even historical fiction. Its worth noting that just because something can be categorized as escape literature doesnt necessarily mean it doesnt have higher literary value. Why Escape Literature Is Popular Its not difficult to understand why escape literature, in all its formats, is well-liked. Being able to immerse oneself in a fictional reality, where troubles and problems are easily recognized and solved, is a comfort provided by movies, books and other forms of entertainment. Truly good works of escape literature create a believable alternate universe, whose inhabitants struggle with dilemmas that the reader might encounter. Its a crafty way to explore moral and ethical themes within an entertaining framework. Examples of Escape Literature The most compelling escapist literature includes works that describe characters in an entirely new, fictional universe. J.R.R. Tolkiens  The Lord of the Rings trilogy is an example of a canonical literature series, complete with its own history and completely made-up languages, that follows elves, dwarves and humans through a mythical quest to save their world. In the series, Tolkien  explores the themes of right versus wrong and how small acts of bravery can be significant. He also pursued his fascination with linguistics by developing new languages such as Elvish for the majestic elves in the stories. Of course, there are plenty of examples of escape literature that are little more than pop culture entertainment. And thats fine too, just as long as students of the genre can differentiate between the two. When Escapism Is Just Entertainment The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, which grew into a massive movie franchise with a cult following is a good example of lowbrow escapist literature. Its themes of love and romance between a vampire and a human (who happens to be friends with a werewolf) is a thinly-veiled religious allegory, but not exactly a canonical work. Still, the appeal of Twilight  is undeniable: the series was a top seller in both its book and movie forms.  is undeniable: the series was a top seller in both its book and movie forms. Another popular fantasy series often compared with the Twilight books, is theHarry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (although the quality of the latter is generally considered superior). Difference Between Escapist and Interpretive Literature Escape literature is frequently discussed alongside interpretive literature, and at times the line between the two genres becomes a little blurry. Interpretive literature seeks to help readers understand deeper questions of life, death, hate, love, sorrow and other elements of human existence. While interpretive literature can be equally as entertaining as its cousin escape, in general, the goal is to bring readers closer to understanding reality. Escape literature wants to take us away from reality, immersing us in a whole new world (but often with the same old problems).

Diverse cultures have different forms of communicating nonverbally therefore, it is important for teachers to be conversant with these differences. For example in a class of diverse backgrounds, there are children who will not make direct eye contact when speaking to a teacher. This is so because according to their culture it shows lack of respect. Some students may also not smile to a teacher because according to their culture it is wrong to smile. For instance in Korean culture smiling signals shallowness and thoughtlessness.
